Task

This year, the whole world is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the first human space flight. April 12, 1961 was the first time in the history of Earth when a manned spacecraft was able not only to enter the Earth's orbit, but also to circle the globe and return home. We have developed a corporate identity for the exhibition “FIRST”, dedicated to Yuri Gagarin and the preparation of that significant event, which will be held at the Museum of Cosmonautics from April 12 to September 12, 2021

Ideas and solutions

The visual concept of the graphic design of the exhibition “FIRST” includes various images related to scientific and technological achievements, fantastic results and impressions that could not be compared with anything previously created or seen, so the graphics are semi-abstract and deliberately do not show the exact details of spacecraft, equipment or the flight itself, leaving the viewer space for imagination and associations. This is how people felt when they learned about the first flight into space: the beginning of a new, still unknown, vast, but bright and fantastic era. We chose a graphic style in an attempt to recreate both the emotions of ordinary people of that era, and the feelings of engineers, testers and all those who contributed to that historical event. After all, it was the first rocket that put a human into Earth's orbit. The first human-piloted spacecraft. The first flight of mankind into space. And, of course, the first impressions of the first person in the world to see the Earth from Space. An important request of the exhibition organizers was for the graphics to look modern, but at the same time to give a historical reference to the visual images and artistic solutions of the early 60s: “We need a modern reinterpretation of the visual images of that event”. When we were developing the style, it was important to take into account that the exhibition has a very diverse target audience, which requires versatility from visual communication. To meet this goal we chose the font “Peshka” from Contrast Foundry, and it also best matches the theme of the exhibition and perfectly suits the developed identity. In addition to visual communication of all attributes of the exhibition, a branded capsule collection of clothing has been created, “FIRST'” by ZDDZ. Dasha Selyanova, the designer of ZDDZ, took inspiration around the concepts of exploration, innovation and investigation, how we use what we have and what we wear in news ways.
