Task
Create an online store of collectable playing cards ‘Magic: The Gathering’ for the Russian market, develop a convenient custom filter system for more than 500,000 cards from 600 different sets
Ideas and solutions
The first difficulty was that each of the several hundred thousand cards issued over the 18 years of the game's existence has a set of characteristics: language (cards are issued in 11 languages), strength (mana), set, price on the stock exchange, artist-author of the illustration, etc. We pulled all this data through the API from an external fan base, using its number and set as the identifier of each card. Some parameters did not cause problems when reflected in the online store, and some had to be worked out separately. Thus, the approximate prices that the customer could not set manually for all cards are formed automatically based on the exchange prices for cards in English (there are mostly no prices for cards in other languages in the database). On the other hand, there was a problem of correctly reflecting these parameters in the catalogue and setting up convenient custom filters that are suitable specifically for fans and collectors. It was important to remember who our users were. For example, they often do not care in what language and in what edition this map is printed. Therefore, we had to write a middleware that collects a certain general "metacart" from individual cards and shows it in the store, allowing us to choose the parameters further and get to a specific real card. On the other hand, in addition to the parameters pulled up through the API, we also had our own, related to the actual state of the product: "new", "almost new", "already played", etc. In this regard, the catalogue and search were fully formed for the specific needs of Magic players. The design was also developed taking into account the potential audience — the use of artistic images and art from cards, orange and dark blue colours, a dynamic pattern of a four-pointed star in different parts of the interface-all this creates an attractive and understandable image of the service for fans
