Museum on RSL (Russian Sign Language) for Children Мик Вайсман
Task
Art literature is not available to deaf primary school students, and a lot of terms related to modern culture are completely absent from the curriculum. The purpose of the application «Museum on RSL for Children» was to provide a comfortable and complete museum experience for deaf visitors of primary school grades.
Ideas and solutions
Gamification mechanics makes the process of acquiring knowledge fun for the child, and the intuitive interface makes the application usable and easy understandable for a child without the help of adults. Dictionary section represents several virtual rooms - from an art gallery to an art cabinet - each of them contains objects that, when clicked, open a video in Russian sign language with Russian subtitles, in which the object's sign designation and description are given. Each term is demonstrated through short videos where deaf children teach their peers about the art in Russian sign language. All videos are also supported by interactive illustrations. In the first version of the application, there were 24 terms, but the library is being replenished and updated. Quiz section is used to consolidate knowledge. The quiz is based on the interaction of sign and verbal language. Each round consists of ten unique questions - they first demonstrate a short gesture, and then three answer options in Russian, and the child needs to choose the correct one.
